How Citizen Science Combats Invisible Enemies, from Radiation to the Corona Virus

In this session, three panelists will discuss how regular citizen scientists can combat enemies such as radioactivity and coronaviruses. The panelists include Jun Yamadera, CEO of FUKUSHIMA Wheel, a startup that developed a share cycle equipped with sensors after the Great East Japan Earthquake, empowering people to obtain various atmospheric data around them, Azby Brown, lead researcher of the volunteer project, Safecast, and World Startup Factory CEO, Gerrit Jan Van't Veen participating from The Hague, Netherlands. Gerrit is currently putting his knowledge and capital to use in the Resilience Project to help startups from all over the world. Jun Yamadera founded Eyes, JAPAN Co. Ltd. in 1995, the first IT startup from the University of Aizu, Fukushima. His team won the championship in Developers Challenge 2013 Health 2.0 in Silicon Valley. He is a TEDxKobe 2015 Speaker. He started a project called “FUKUSHIMA Wheel” in the aftermath of the terrible disaster caused by the earthquake and nuclear accident in Fukushima, JAPAN in March 11, 2011. He has more than 24 years experience in free culture, civic tech and cutting edge technologies such as AI, blockchain and cyber security.
